Leftover Halloween Candy

This is from the livingonadime.com newsletter.  I always wait until the day after Halloween to stock up on candy for my daughter's birthday pinata.  It was great to read some other ideas for it.

Leftover Halloween Candy

by Tawra Kellam

To prevent sugar shock, have a big bag of popcorn waiting when everyone comes back from Trick or Treating. It's easy to fix and will counteract some of the sweet stuff.

Here are some tips for using all of that extra Halloween Candy!

You can freeze candy up to a year in the freezer.

Don't forget to buy discounted Halloween candy for Christmas stockings and parties. Most kids don't care if their Christmas candy is orange and black or if it has silver and gold wrappers instead of red and green.

Use leftover Halloween candy in Christmas baking and for making gingerbread houses.

Use grated or chopped chocolate in place of chocolate chips in cookies.

It is easier to cut candy into pieces if you freeze it first.

Break Butterfinger candy bars into peanut butter cookie dough.

Sprinkle chopped chocolates on a white or chocolate frosted cake or use them to top ice cream and cheesecake.

Mix leftover chopped chocolates into cake mixes.

When making cupcakes, decorate the tops with one Hershey's kiss or a mini candy bar.

Pour some leftover candy into a basket or pretty bowl to give to someone for a special gift.

Even a Christmas bag full of an assortment of candies would be a gift that would delight anyone - kids, adults, co-workers or neighbors.

When making apple butter, instead of your usual spices use 1/2 cup red cinnamon candies and 1 Tbsp. cinnamon for every 10 cups apples and your regular amount of sugar.

We talk a lot about what to do with leftover candy but don't forget you can also do nothing with it but eat it! :) :) ...my favorite thing! Stockpile bags of candy to use for school parties, birthday parties and so on. In my case, I have a huge candy jar I keep full for when the grandkids come to visit. I can go through pounds of it that way. It keeps forever so don't feel that you have to hurry and use it.

Stop Flushing $$$ Down the Toilet (literally....)

I just never know where I'm going to find ideas and deals.  This one was from Lorrie Flem of TeachMagazine.com.

"I have a neat trip for cleaning the dreaded toilet. I was using the fizzy tablets from the store. Now I have found a much cheaper way. I buy denture fizzy tablets at the Dollar Store and get 100 for a $1.00. Pop two of them in the toilet bowl and wait for them to stop fizzing. Now use your brush and wipe it clean!"

Homemade Face Paint

We don't do Halloween around here, but we're definitely into dress up at other times!  Living on a Dime Newsletter from Livingonadime.com had some cheaper ideas today and I wanted to share the homemade face paint.

Face Paint

1 tsp. corn starch
1/2 tsp. water
1/2 tsp. cold cream
food coloring
Mix all ingredients together in an old muffin pan and you are ready to paint. This amount makes one color.

I haven't made/used this yet, but I would think that it would be easier to remove since it's made with cold cream.

Quickie CVS

I don't have my Sunday paper yet, but since I needed to pick up a few things anyway, I decided to just see if there was anything I could pick up easy enough. I made sure to use my FREE coupons I had received because I often forget about them if I don't use them quickly.

Advil 24 count
Retail 3.99
After Coupon: FREE

Cottonelle Fresh Flushable Moist Wipes
Retail 3.89
After coupon: FREE

Then CVS is offering a free Sanitizer Pen when you sign in using your Extra Care Card and email.  Just go to CVS Free Sanitizer.
Retail Price: 1.99
After Coupon: FREE

So, that adds up to $9.87 worth of things for FREE.  Oh, and by the way, I originally found out about all these deals on http://www.freebieshark.com/!

Freebies this week

Only received four things this week, but they were four cool and important things.

First, received two coupons for free items.  One is for a tub of Conttonelle Fresh Flushable Moist Wipes.  Basically diaper wipes for adults, right?  ;-)  But it's free!

Also received a coupon for a free 24 count bottle of Advil.

But the second set of free things are the coolest.  I received for free my dd's Singapore Math textbook for second semester AND the first semester of next year.  I posted awhile back about Paperback Swap which is how I scored them.  I posted them both on my wish list and when someone posted them, I received a note from the system asking if I still wanted the book.  I received her first semester math text the same way!

Apple Market 10/16

Made a running glance through my Apple Market add early this morning.  I knew I would be going to a meeting that would bring me back by the Apple Market that takes printed coupons, so I didn't want to waste  the opportunity.  There were many more things that were available, but these were the only two things I found that I wanted.

Old Orchard Apple Juice $0.99
$0.50/1 printable coupon here
Final Price: $0.49 each

General Mills/Maxwell House International Coffee 2/$5
$1/1 coupon 9/26 SS
$0.75/1 coupon 10/10 SS
Final Price: $1.63 each

My retail was $6.98.  Well, I say retail but it was actually the sale price.  After using coupons, I paid $4.23 which is a 40% savings off the sale price.  I really need to remember to right down what the original price on things are at Apple Market, so my numbers look better!

Savings in the Midst of Necessity

I won't be shopping this week.  Things are really tight.  We were running out some basics like milk and bread, and my dh doesn't get paid until next Friday.  Sooooo, what to do?

Well, I used my ECB and RR.  I won't "save" as much next time I do my shopping there, but I was able to get some basics for little to nothing.

At Walgreens, I purchased $7.07 worth of basics for only $0.07.  That's a savings of 99%.

At CVS, I purchased $8.07 for $1.07 (what's with all the 7's?).  Anyway, that's a savings of 87%.

It was a blessing to have "the cash" to use when in a pinch!

I ran into the situation again that I had more coupons than items.  That's a no-no at both Wags and CVS.  My total was $7.40, but I still had $6 in RR.  Soooooo, I added two packs of Mike's favorite gum for $2.60 which meant I now owed $10 BUT then I could give them my $6 in RR.  I always think its a hoot that sometimes I have to spend more to pay less!
